11 4 15 morning call

Lovely day on the south shore yesterday. The north shore looked really small at dawn, didn't see it during the rest of the day, but I saw the windsurfers on the cam.

Below is a sequence of a drop knee turn by Jason Hall.
He's goofy, so the right foot is his front one, but he brings it all the way back to achieve a sharp/stylish turn.

Notice how the left foot didn't move an inch and his toes are still facing the "outside of the turn" rail. A bit of a ballerina step.

Turn is done, the right foot moves back to be a front foot again. Notice also the perfect use of the paddle during the whole turn. Always touching the water, and leaning on it just as much as he needed to. Thanks Jason!

You'll see some of those together with plenty other tricks in this amazing video of Laird Hamilton SUP surfing Hanalei Bay. This video for me is top 3 surfing clips ever (I will post the other ones, but only when the right occasion arises).
The control he shows when he's taking off fin first on slightly slopy but pretty big waves is ridiculous.

Back on planet Earth, yesterday's sunset shot is from my friend Nino at Launiupoko.

Some of that northerly energy finally made it to Maui's north shore (2.6f 13s) and if you add the windswell on top of that, there will be some kind of waves today.
I'm gonna call the contest to resume (yesterday lay day) with Amateurs, Masters and Grand Masters.
They better run it, since the N energy is gonna fade and tomorrow is going to be pretty much windswell only.

Barbers reads 2.5f 15s and that means that I'm shooting for a session at dawn in Lahaina before a lesson I have at 7.30. I like to start things early.
Wind map shows that NW fetch we had a look at two days ago. No more waves generated for us down south, as you can see the fetch is now more zonal and shooting at south America.

Below is the windity version of the same thing. I post it so you guys can compare it to its prediction two days ago.

Yeah right. Nobody will scroll down two posts, so I do the effort for you.
Above: real time wind map this morning.
Below: prediction of this morning's wind map made two days ago.

As you can see, they are pretty damn close. What we learn is that short term prediction of the atmosphere are reliable. The problem starts when you go passed 4-6 days.
We also learn that the weekend NW swell is confirmed. Surfline sees it peaking during the night between Saturday and Sunday at 5.8f 15s.

It should be pretty windy, but you guys check MC2km later.
I'll leave you with a photo of Kai Lenny by Onemorefoto. How's that barrel in the background?

And this is surfer Dylan McNeil getting slotted at Lanes.

And Laird is not using a leash in that cool video. Great shot of Dylan McNeil!
